A whopping 98% websites’ embedded 3rd parties were involved in advertising and tracking. Around 21 third party trackers are embedded in a website on an average, out of which 8 are third party cookies. It is via these trackers that websites collect personal data of users from their devices. The state of privacy of Indian websites too isn’t encouraging with 96% websites having at least one tracker embedded. As per the study, the average readability score of an Indian organizations’ notices are difficult to read and very confusing. Further, adding to the privacy concerns is the low transparency demonstrated by Indian organizations in their privacy notices. Of concern is the fact that the access to personal data by these mobile apps has seen a steady rise over the last 5 years.

The most worrying part is the privacy infringements by Indian children’s apps with 21% accessing the camera, 28% accessing phone details and 55% containing in-App ads. Around 68% and 69% of Android and iOS apps respectively can access the users’ camera and almost 46% of Android apps and 41% of iOS apps can read the users’ contacts.Īdditionally, a significantly higher number of Indian apps request permission to access the microphone and to read SMS & contacts compared to their counterparts in the US and EU with 34% and 30% respectively. According to the annual privacy study conducted by Arrka for 2021, a whopping 74% of Android apps have access to the exact precise location of the user with a good 56% of iOS apps taking access to the location even when the app is not in use.
